Insightful review: employee monitoring and time tracking after a year with a remote IT team

 ·  By Isadora Dunmore

Hands-on after about a year with around 10 mostly off-site users: live monitoring, productive-activity reports, shift timings, and attendance. From $8 per user per month on annual billing; the upper plans get expensive for big teams.

And if you have lots of employees, then https://controlio.net/employee-monitoring.html just has to be used so that you can check on their activity. Controlio software sits on the laptop or phone. Someone starts a task, or it picks up after login. You get hours by person. You see the sites that took the afternoon and the long idle stretches that do not match the timesheet. A manager approves the week from the numbers. Screenshots exist for the client who asks. Turn them off for everyone else. Staff can pause the agent for personal tasks.

This review comes from daily use, not from a feature list. We used Controlio for about a year to look after a team of around 10 people, many of them working off-site: monitoring their computers, helping them when something went wrong, tracking time and attendance, and checking how work time was spent on projects.

How we reviewed it

Hands-on, about one year, around 10 users. We used it for monitoring off-site staff, team shift timings, attendance, productive-activity tracking, and remote support of those users (Controlio for the live view, a separate remote connection tool for control). Prices and plan details below were checked on Controlio’s own pricing page on 14 October 2026; features we did not use ourselves are marked as “per Controlio.”

Who it is for

IT service companies, MSPs, and small offices whose staff work from home or from client sites, and managers who need answers to “Who worked when, on what, and how much of it was productive?” without asking for timesheets. It is less suited to very large teams on a tight budget, where the per-user price adds up quickly.

What we used most

  • Monitoring: a live overview of who is online and what each person is working on, with screenshots and app and website usage. This was the feature we relied on every day.
  • Productive-activity tracking: apps and websites are labelled productive or unproductive per team, so the reports show how much of the day went on real work. Getting the labels right for our own tools took a little time at the start and paid off afterwards.
  • Shift timings and attendance: we set each team’s working hours, and attendance is worked out from computer activity, so late starts and short days show up without manual timesheets.
  • Time on projects: time tracked against projects and tasks gave us the “where did the hours go” view for client work.
  • Remote support: Controlio’s live view showed us what an off-site user was seeing and what they had been doing, so we understood the problem before connecting. We then connected with our separate remote connection tool to fix it; Controlio itself is view-only and does not take control of the computer.

Plans and prices

Prices last checked: 14 October 2026. US dollars per user per month on annual billing, as shown on the Controlio pricing page. Month-to-month billing is offered on some plans, but the page does not list those prices.

Deployment notes for IT

  • The agent runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux (per Controlio). Company computers can run it visibly or in stealth mode all the time or only during set hours; personal computers use visible mode with clock-in and clock-out buttons.
  • Roll it out with your usual tools: Controlio documents remote installation on Windows and on macOS through MDM. Test on one machine first and check that your antivirus and EDR allow the agent.
  • Managers only see their own team’s data, and employees can be given access to their own data. Controlio says keystrokes are not logged and lists SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA and GDPR compliance on its site.
  • Set the productive and unproductive labels per team during the trial; the default labels will not match an IT team’s tools (terminals, remote desktop clients, admin consoles) without some tuning.

Before you monitor anyone, tell staff what is tracked and why, put it in writing, and check the law where they work. Rules differ by country (for example, GDPR in the EU and UK requires a lawful basis and proportionate monitoring). Avoid stealth mode on personal devices, keep screenshot frequency as low as your purpose allows, and restrict who can see the data.

What could be better?

  • The upper plans are costly for big teams; the per-user price is fine at 10 users and adds up fast at 100 or more.
  • Monthly prices are not shown on the pricing page, so you have to ask or start the trial to see them.
  • Some extras that feel basic for a monitoring tool, such as more frequent screenshots or screen recording, are paid add-ons.

Alternatives

Hubstaff and Time Doctor focus more on timesheets, payroll, and field teams; ActivTrak leans towards analytics with less screenshot-heavy monitoring; and Teramind goes further into insider threat and data-loss prevention.

Verdict

After a year with a 10-person, mostly remote team, we would recommend Controlio to IT companies that want to monitor remote staff and keep track of productive activity. Monitoring and the productive-activity reports are worth the price for a small team. For a large team, run the numbers on the higher plans first, and agree on the monitoring rules with your staff before you switch it on.

Controlio covers the usual cases and lets you leave the heavy settings off. Exports go into payroll tools. Staff can pause the agent. Most teams have the basic view running within a day. The reports show idle gaps and app switches so you can adjust the load without daily check-ins. One group used the data to move two tasks off a person who had been carrying them for weeks. The extra hours disappeared. The flexible schedule stayed.

Closing notes on the year of use

The live view and productive labels answered the daily questions about hours and apps. Controlio handled that side for the 10-person team. Most managers check the first week of reports, then leave the settings alone once the labels match the actual tools
